background
Rotterdam was founded in 1230. In the following centuries the city was a rich commercial city. In the 15th century it became famous for the Humanist Erasmus of Rotterdam.
In 1853, the Nieuwe Waterweg was built and Rotterdam was suddenly connected to the whole world. The city has rapidly developed into one of the largest ports in the world. On May 14, 1940, German fighter bombers destroyed almost the entire city center. After the war, reconstruction began on the drawing board. Nowadays, in many places, the city is futuristic and lively, but not crowded. You will meet people from all over the world, and because of the constant emergence of new, curious structures, Rotterdam is getting younger and younger.
In the 1990s, Rotterdam was the birthplace and stronghold of Hardcore and Gabba (gabber). This is fast, wild techno music. Today, there are still relics of this that are played in some clubs.
According to recent surveys, Rotterdam has reached 7 points after Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Shenzen (China), Pusan (South Korea) and Taiwan. It is the largest port in the world. Of course there is much more to see and experience than the harbor. Whether it’s modern or historical, party or relaxation - there’s something for everyone here.
- Rotterdam includes the district of Hoek van Holland and the outer harbor of Europoort.

Rotterdam Airport
- Rotterdam Airport is about 8 kilometers north-west of the city center. The airport is connected to the main railway station by bus number 33. It runs every 15 minutes during the day. The bus takes about 20 minutes to get there. The fare for the single ticket is 3,- €, and users of the OV chipset will be charged for this journey up to 1,74 € (stand: 26 June 2015).

The low-cost airline subsidiary of AirFrance-KLM also connects Rotterdam with Berlin (Tegel airport), Friedrichshafen, Innsbruck, Salzburg and Vienna. There are also links with other European objectives and with Turkey (status: 26 June 2015). There are also direct flights from Rotterdam to Hamburg.

mobility
In general, the Rotterdam public transport system is well developed by the city-owned RET (http://www.ret.nl).
As single tickets are relatively expensive, a single ticket valid for one hour costs 3,- € (stand: For those who would like to use public transport or the railway in the Netherlands, the OV-chipkaart (OV chip card, where OV stands for openbaar vervoer "public transport") is an option. The maximum charge for the single public transport service in the Rotterdam tariff area is 1.74 €. A special feature of the OV-chipkaart is that the more you use it within a day, the fare for the individual routes decreases. The maximum daily ticket price is 8 € (stand: March 2019).
There are also time tickets for one (€13), two or three days.
The Rotterdam Welcome Card can also be purchased for a small additional fee, which offers a 25% discount on entrance fees for museums and the attractions of Rotterdam in addition to the use of Rotterdam’s public transport. There are other discounts for selected restaurants, hotels and nightclubs in this map.

sights
dolfshaven
In this district of Rotterdam you will find the "old" Holland. This place used to serve as the harbor of the city of Delft. There is a canal with beautiful gables houses, a windmill and the former museum of the history of the city "De Dubbelde Palmboom". In 1365 the Delfshavense Schie was lifted and a connection to the sea was established. In the town of Delfshaven, money was earned by herring fishing, whaling, shipbuilding and the distillation of gin.
Piet Heyn was born here on November 25, 1577. He was one of the most outstanding Dutch freebooters. In 1628, he captured the Spanish "silver fleet" ten miles east of Havana, making him the Dutch folk hero. His prey was estimated to be 12 million guilds, which today amounts to about one billion euros. His birthplace is in Piet Heynstraat and his statue at the Achterhaven.
The pilgrim fathers (Pilgrim Fathers) also started from here to America. They first went to England by ship "Speedwell", where they were accompanied by the "Mayflower" and founded Plymouth in America.
The Pelgrim brewery in the center of Delfshaven recalls that in Rotterdam the pilgrims started their journey to the promised land of America. Like pilgrims, they joined the great adventure of strangers. Some of them may have asked for the blessing in the Pilgrim Church and the nearby brewery for a last beer. Pilgrim beer is still served here today.
Route to Delfshaven
- Route: Starting from the Erasmusbrücke (NW-End), you go to 1Leuvehaven metro station and then turn left into the broad Vasteland road. After the roundabout, on2Parkhaven it enters the road Westzeedijk. In between, at the left level of the clinic, a park is worth a detour, a small castle and the Euromast TV tower invite visitors to linger. Follow the road Westzeedijk until you reach a pedestrian street on the right, 3 Oostkousdijk. This, in turn, passes into the Havenstraat and, after crossing the Achterhaven street, reaches the 4location of Erfbrug, which is the starting point for the exploration in 5 Delfshaven.
- Return: Starting from the location of Erfbrug, follow the 6Nieuwe Binnenweg as far as the road Edraenchtensplein crosses. Continue on the right of this road, just on the road 8Westersingel until you reach Vasteland from the exit (left) to return to the right to the starting point of the Erasmusbrücke.
It is advisable to take a good foot for this trip, including a trip to Delfshaven.
center
Rotterdam suffered greatly during the Second World War, so a beautiful historical sightseeing should not be expected. Instead, you will find many modern buildings in the center.
- One of the most famous buildings is the 1 market hall. There are many small shops, restaurants and cafes inside. The walls are painted with plants and fruits. Around the hall there are apartments whose residents can look through windows in the hall.
- Opposite the market hall, you will find
1 Kubushaus. These are cubes placed at the top of a bridge. In most dice people live, one can be visited.
- Another landmark is the 2Erasmus bridge across the Meuse. The cable-stayed bridge has a white, curved pylon and is therefore called De Zwaan (= The Swan).
- The 3 Euromastist of the Rotterdam TV tower (see activities).
South of the Meuse
- Rotterdam was an important harbor for emigrants to the USA. On 4Hotel New York started for her great trip across the Atlantic. It is one of the few preserved old buildings in Rotterdam and still houses a hotel and restaurant (see accommodation). The Lost Luggage Depot, which is a shelf with lost suitcases, is just next to the emigration.
- Around the old New York hotel, a few modern towers have been built in recent years, creating a beautiful skyline with the neighboring Erasmus Bridge and the hotel.

activities
- city tour tour of Rotterdamin the port museum
This tour links the most important sights of modern Rotterdam. You can see the skyline, the huge port facilities and the futuristic architecture. The hike takes about 2 hours without a harbor tour.
Start at 1 Beurs/Churchillplein metro station. The 8 m high sculpture called Cascade comes from Atelier Van Lieshout and makes it easy to see the link with the stock exchange and the crude oil spot market. We will continue in the direction of arbitamsedijk. On the left is the Maritime Museum. There are ship engines and boats on the outside, but you have to do without explanations. In front of the museum is the Walk of Fame. Here, as in Hollywood, famous stars have left their hand or footprints in concrete. Continue in the direction of Maas passing the IMAX cinema to the 2Erasmus Bridge. The bridge has been the new landmark of Rotterdam since 1996. The nicknamed "de Zwaan" (the swan) was introduced to her by the nickname of the nickname "de Zwaan". To the right of the bridge is the pier of Spido, where you can get to the harbor. From the tour you will continue along the Erasmus Bridge. The asphalt on the footpath is deep black and glitters in the sun. It looks like you're walking across a starry sky. On the right is the magnificent skyline and on the left side of the bridge the endless port facilities. The southern part of the bridge can be folded upwards. This is not done by the pulley, as you might expect with a rope bridge, but by four hydraulic cylinders hidden in the foundation.
On the other side of the Meuse turn right into the 3 Wilhelminakade, passing the new Cruise Terminal. Follow the road to the end of the peninsula. This is the New York Hotel. From the Wilhelmine paper, from 1873 to 1971, the American steamers drove off with their numerous emigrants. The golden writing on the last house reminds us.
After this short trip into the history of Rotterdam, you will return to the Erasmusbrücke bridge on the Wilhelminakade, cross the road that comes from the bridge to the Wilhelminaplein. On the left you will find the Stieltjesstraat. In 1942/43, many Rotterdam children were deported to the concentration camps in Auschwitz and Sobibor. A blackboard today reminds of this terrible part of the city's history. Then you cross a newer drawbridge and you will arrive at the 4 Koninginnebrug, which you will cross to the left once more. The green bridge opposite is the 5Konigshavenbrug, called "de Hef". It served as a railway bridge until 1993. The middle part could be driven up to make room for the ships passing through. With the new construction of the southern link, where the railway line will pass through a tunnel, the bridge became superfluous.
Continue to the right on the Prins Hendrik Kade and turn left on the Brugweg on the 6 Willemsbrug. Then turn right over the Verlengde Willemsbrug in direction 7 metro station Blaak. There are the 8 dice apartments. The architect Piet Blom put all the cubes on the top and put the apartments in. You can visit one cube, the others you can stay in, because since 2009 the hostel is located there.
- Cube houses, Overblaak 70.
The main square is now 9Laurenskerk. The church tower has no point because in the Middle Ages the wood was used for shipbuilding. Next to the church is the monument to the Erasmus of Rotterdam in a small park.
In no way should you miss the visit of the huge 10 Market Hall, which can not be overlooked by the cube houses and the Great Church. It is an eye-catching sight to take in tastefully-designed products, from fish to exotic spices to chocolate. The beautiful paintings on the walls do something else.
This is the end of the tour. Now you can go shopping on the Hoogstraat, or you can go back to the metro, cross the main street and pass through an inconspicuous street behind the cube apartments to the Oude Haven. There you can relax in one of the numerous pubs from the long march.
- harbor
Spido is the best address for a tour through the harbor. The simple harbor tour takes place all year round, takes about 75 minutes and costs 9.50 € for adults and 5.80 € for children between 4 and 11 years. In the summer months of July and August, there will also be extensive tours, summer evening tours and day excursions to the Europoort and the Deltaworks. The trips are commented in 6 languages, also in German and English. Departure is on Willemsplein 85, at the foot of the Erasmus Bridge.
- July-October, historical tramline 10 from Willemsplein
- euro
20 Euromast, Parkhaven 20. Tel: +31 10-436 48 11. The tower has a height of 185 m. After its construction in 1960, it was 101 meters high. In 1970, the Space Tower was placed on its top, where a Euroscope observation gondola runs upwards. At 100m above sea level, there is a restaurant and two suites are open for overnight stays: Apr-Sept from 9:30 am, Oct-March from 10 am. Price: admission €9.50.
- fish
Instead of buying a new bike, you can also fish for a bike in the canal (fry). For example, you can rent the appropriate catch at the Literature Café 21Huis der Zotheid (translated for example "House of madness") for about 8 EUR per hour.
purchase
There is a simple formula: The closer you get to the station, the more expensive it becomes. The Nieuwe Binneweg and the Blaak market are therefore the best suited for bargain hunters.
- The Nieuwe Inland Way is the scene mile of Rotterdam. It starts in Delfshaven and ends at the Dragon Plein. The most interesting shops are from the juice venstraat, accessible via the metro station Dijkzicht. Here you will find alternative clothes, CDs and of course coffee shops. Lovers of cheerful colorful bags of the cult brand Kitsch Kitchen will find at Fabricati (No. 72) and Movimento (No. 78). Hardcore and Gabber CDs are available on MidTown Records, for Gothics there is Black Widow (No. 13) with various black clothes, high percentage discounts are available in the Denn Discount, and in the Volume Market (No. 30) you can take the way for the Sit buy sightseeing.
- West Kruiskade: There are Asian restaurants and a supermarket with Asian food and household products.
- Lijnbaan is the pedestrian zone in the city center. Here are stores of all fashion chains for fashion victims. If you want to make Poffertjes at home, you can buy a special Poffertjes pan at the Household Shop at the corner of Oude Binnenweg/Doormanstraat. Stay away from the beginner set for tourists ! It's just expensive, not teflon-coated, and the recipe is catastrophically translated.
- Blaak: There is a market at the metro station of the same name. We offer food, fish, spices, clothes, books, jewelry and much more. Market days are Tuesday and Saturday from 8:00 to 17:30.
- Zwart Janstraat: In the north of the city there are goods for daily use and Belgian beer.
